MLB trade rumors: Yankees haven't given up on Manny Machado

The Yankees have dominated a slow MLB offseason so far, and they might not be done yet.

New York reached out to the Orioles again earlier this week about the possibility of acquiring Manny Machado, FanRag Sports reported Friday.

It doesn't appear any deal is imminent and there are numerous obstacles that could prevent one, but the Yankees obviously aren't satisfied after acquiring Giancarlo Stanton from the Marlins last month.

So does general manager Brian Cashman have what it takes to land one of the best third basemen in the game? It appears so, as the Yankees have managed to build a strong stable of prospects in recent years. FanRag Sports suggests pitchers Justus Sheffield and Chance Adams, outfielder Clint Frazier and infielder Miguel Andujar as names that might be of interest.

Andujar, incidentally, is currently penciled in as New York's potential starter at third after the departure of Chase Headley earlier this offseason. But Andujar, who will turn 23 during spring training, has played only 58 games above the Double-A level. Opening the season with that kind of inexperience at a key position would be a risk for a team with expectations this high, so it may come down to how much potentially acquiring Machado for only a year — he'll be a free agent after 2018 — is worth to New York.

There's also the matter of whether Orioles owner Peter Angelos would even allow his best player to be dealt to the Yankees. Reports last month indicated Angelos wasn't inclined to do so, and team officials had even expressed concern over dealing Machado to another team, like the White Sox, who could possibly flip him to the Yankees this summer.

Machado, 25, is a three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner in six major league seasons. While his productivity dipped a bit in 2017, his .259/.310/.471 slash line with 33 doubles, 33 home runs and 95 RBIs is still plenty alluring.
