UFC 219 video recap: Cyborg defeats Holm, retains women's 145-pound title

Even before she was signed to the UFC in 2016, Cris Cyborg was already deemed by many as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) female fighters in the game today. On Saturday night at UFC 219, she further established the accolades given to her by defeating former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm.

What was the high point of the fight?

The fight was expected to remain predominantly on the feet, given the striking prowess of both women, and it was exactly what happened. Save for Holm’s clinches and stand-up skills that helped contain some of Cyborg’s attacks, it was the champion who landed the stronger, more damaging strikes.

Holm did have her flashes of brilliance with her left hand, but it was just not enough to make a mark, both literally and figuratively.

Where do these two go from here?

While she is still a top contender at bantamweight, I am personally curious to see how Holly Holm would do at the women’s 145-pound division. Her coach Mike Winkeljohn did say that making the weight was much easier for her, and a few more good wins could likely lead her back to a title shot.

It was a strong statement win for Cris Cyborg, going up against one of the best female strikers in the UFC. She did say she wants a fight against Megan Anderson next, but at this point, it is probably safe to say that Cyborg has yet to face a challenger who could give her a run for her money.

Watch it now, later or never?

Watch it now, especially if you are a fan of a technical (albeit one-sided) striking battle.
