Trevon Grimes transfers to Florida, Ohio State loses former top receiver recruit: Buckeyes football news

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State lost a former top-ranked recruit on Friday, as receiver Trevon Grimes announced that he is transferring to Florida.

A four-star recruit in the Class of 2017 who was ranked as the No. 41 overall player in his class and the sixth-best receiver prospect according to 247sports.com, Grimes left the Buckeyes in the middle of this season to attend to what Urban Meyer said were family issues in Florida.

Meyer later said Grimes was taking online classes, and Ohio State seemed to hold out some hope that he would come back to Columbus for the 2018 season. But the Fort Lauderdale native confirmed Friday that he would continue his college career with the Florida Gators and first-year coach Dan Mullen, who is one of Meyer's closest friends.

Gainesville is 330 miles from Fort Lauderdale. Columbus is 1,130 miles.

"I just felt like (Florida) fit for me. It's close to home. Of course, being in my situation that I'm in right now, I have to be close to home," Grimes told sun-sentinel.com.

Grimes played in a handful of blowouts this season, catching three passes for 20 yards against Army and UNLV.

In the seventh week of the season, Meyer missed his regular Monday news conference because he was visiting with Grimes and his family in Florida. Meyer said two days later, "Trevon is dealing with family health issues. I saw him. He's doing great."

In early November, Meyer reiterated the plan for Grimes to remain a Buckeye. Yet this move can't come as any surprise. It is a blow to the OSU receiving group, however.

In the Class of 2017, the Buckeyes looked for a big receiver haul, with Grimes, a 6-foot-3, 202-pounder who had the look of a future No. 1 receiver; Tyjon Lindsey, a 5-foot-9, 161-pound slot receiver from Las Vegas; and Jaylen Harris, a 6-foot-5 target from Cleveland Heights.

Grimes was the No. 42 overall recruit in 2017. Lindsey was No. 50. Harris was No. 177.

Lindsey decommitted from Ohio State late in the recruiting process and signed with Nebraska. Now Grimes is gone. That leaves Harris and Ellijah Gardiner, a late add in 2017 from Texas who was the No. 796 overall recruit.

Ohio State's future outlook at receiver now hinges on these players:

* True sophomores Austin Mack and Ben Victor.

* First-year receivers Harris and Gardiner.

* 2018 recruits Kamryn Babb (No. 66 overall players in 2018 recruiting class), Ble Smith (No. 121) and Cameron Brown (No. 342).

It's easy to see how Grimes would have fit into that group. He profiled as the most likely future receiving star on the roster.

Now he'll play for Florida, where former Ohio State quarterback commit Emory Jones, who signed with the Gators on Wednesday, may wind up throwing him those passes.
