Tom Brady understands Rob Gronkowski's frustration, hopes he isn't suspended

In the Patriots' 23-3 win over the Bills yesterday, Rob Gronkowski's frustrations boiled over when he delivered a late hit on Tre'Davious White that could trigger additional discipline from the league.

Tom Brady understands where his tight end's frustrations are coming from.

During the play in question, Gronkowski claimed he was held and felt he was interfered with as White intercepted Brady. Gronkowski then delivered a cheap shot to a defenseless White as he was laying on the ground, and officials flagged him for a personal foul. After the game, Gronk apologized and explained his frustration on inconsistent calls against him throughout his career.

During his weekly interview on WEEI's "Kirk & Callahan" show Monday morning, his quarterback seemed to agree.

"I think for him it is frustrating," Brady said. "I mean, he’s 270 pounds, so when they put a 190-pound player on him, any time there’s any contact, just by inertia, the defender is gonna move, so then you basically limit it to a no-contact play and it’s all try to out-quick someone, which obviously those guys are a lot quicker. Gronk tries to get as close as he can to use his size, but the refs, they throw a lot of flags on him. He’s tried to change his style of play a little bit, but he obviously gets held and grabbed all day long, so I’d say it’s very frustrating for him. You get these pass interference calls and he’s getting held the whole game, and then he doesn’t get a call, and I could see why’s he very frustrated. I think it’s frustrating for everybody."

Brady defended how his tight end's frustrations came out in a negative way. Gronk earned an unnecessary roughness penalty for his late hit, but wasn't ejected.

"It’s an emotional game, and these are all spur-of-the-moment things," Brady said. "They just happen, and we deal with the penalty, and they got some penalties on the play too. You always love to keep your cool all the time, but you’re in a sport where you’re trying to run and block and hit and tackle and be physical and aggressive, and that’s why people tune in. If it was a pillow fight, people wouldn’t tune in to watch."

Does Brady think Gronkowski will be suspended?

"I hope not," he said. "I mean, I certainly hope not. Yeah, I hope not."
