Kobe Bryant's jerseys, both No. 8 and No. 24, were raised to the Staples Center rafters on Monday night — a testament to what was one of the greatest careers in pro hoops history.
His special night was captured by the folks at Snapchat, and a new episode of Versus on its Discover page will air Tuesday evening.
A first look at the episode is below:
The episode follows Bryant from his pregame arrival in a helicopter to the immortalization of his jerseys at halftime of his Los Angeles Lakers' loss to the Golden State Warriors. If forced to pick between one, Bryant said Monday night that he'd pick the No. 24 version of himself over the No. 8 version since that was the more difficult chapter.
Behold, the power of Snapchat — an NBA partner since 2015.
The partnership has continued to grow since its inception, with the NBA reaching 34 million Snapchat users during the 2016-17 season. Being so, the partnership is being extended through the 2019-2020 season, a Snap Inc. spokesperson told USA TODAY Sports, as both parties continue to explore new ways to reach users and fans.
"Our young, passionate fans have embraced Snapchat as a way to get closer to the game," said NBA executive vice president of digital media, Melissa Rosenthal Brenner. "With new shows like Versus, we look forward to bringing fans behind-the-scenes and highlighting powerful stories about our teams and players.”
In addition, another Snapchat show — Chasing History, which debuted during last year's NBA Finals and reached 17 million users — will return for the 2018 Finals, according to the spokesperson. The five-episode show will give users a behind-the-scenes look at the players as they compete on basketball's biggest stage.
"The NBA has been an incredible 360 (degree) partner, utilizing all of Snap's unique creative tools and content opportunities to reach fans around the world," said Ben Schwerin, Snapchat's vice president of partnerships. "Whether it be shows like Versus or custom Bitmojis and Lenses, the NBA has a deep enthusiasm for innovation and we're thrilled to continue our partnership in the years ahead."
