Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has withdrawn his appeal of his six-game suspension, his agents announced Wednesday.
"In consultation with the NFLPA and his lawyers, and after careful deliberation and review of the recent Second Circuit decisions, Mr. Elliott has decided to forgo any further appeals and will serve the remaining suspension," agents Rocky Arceneaux and Frank Salzano said in a statement.
"This decision arises from a practical assessment of the current legal landscape. Mr. Elliott's desire for closure in this matter is in his best interests, as well as the best interests of his teammates, family and friends. This decision is in no way an admission of any wrongdoing, and Mr. Elliott is pleased that the legal fight mounted by him and his team resulted in the disclosure of many hidden truths regarding this matter, as well public exposure of the NFL's mismanagement of its disciplinary process.
"Mr. Elliott will maximize this time away from the game and come back even stronger both on and off the field. He intends to release a final personal statement in the upcoming weeks and until then we have no further comment."
Earlier this week, Cowboys executive Stephen Jones confirmed Elliott will be training outside the United States during his suspension.
Elliott, 22, was suspended by commissioner Roger Goodell in August after the league concluded following a yearlong investigation that he had several physical confrontations in the summer of 2016 in Ohio with his girlfriend at the time. The NFL players' union sued on Elliott's behalf.
He was able to play in the first eight games through a number of legal decisions, but an emergency injunction request by the NFL Players Association on his behalf was denied by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week.
The next hearing in Elliott's case had been set for Dec. 1, meaning he would have served four games of his suspension by the time the hearing took place.
The Cowboys missed Elliott in last Sunday's 27-7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, as the team rushed for 107 yards on 21 carries. Alfred Morris led the Cowboys with 53 yards on 11 carries but had just 8 yards on six first-half carries. Elliott had 783 rushing yards in the first eight games of the season, with four straight games of more than 90 yards on the ground.
Elliott will return to the Cowboys on Christmas Eve against the Seattle Seahawks.
